The Virgin Suicides

The Virgin Suicides was a 1993 novel written by Jeffrey Eugenides .  It takes place in Grosse Pointe Michigan in 1974.  It's about the suicides of the five Lisbon sisters, Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary and Therese.  And is narrated by a group of boys who live in the neighborhood and are amused by the girls.  The Lisbons are a Catholic family Their father is a math teacher and their mother is a homemaker, they are both very strict.  Cecilia is the youngest and first of the sisters to die.  At the first party the Lisbons allowed the girls to have, Cecilia jumps out of the window onto the pointed fence.  The remaining sisters go on with their lives and go to the homecoming dance, with their dates.  Lux  and her boyfriend Trip spend the night on the football field together after the dance. Lux doesn't come home until the next moring.  The Lisbon parents overreact and take the girls out of school and keep them in the house.  After being locked up the girls end up killing themselves one by one.  After all their girls dead the Lisbons sold the house and moved.  The book was also made into a movie in 1999 directed by Sofia Coppola

This is always one of the best movies when it comes to imagery and capturing a mood. I love it and it's definitely part of what has made me idealize the 70's as being really dreamy and whatnot.
Great Post!

Hmm, might have to check it out. Looks like it takes place in the 1970s, judging from the record player and records in one of the photos.
