The Monterey Pop Festival took place on June 16th till June 18th in 1967, at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. It was planed by Lou Adler, John Phillips, Alan Pariser and Derek Taylor. The board members were Donovan, Mick Jagger, Andrew Oldham, Paul Simon, Smokey Robinson, Roger McGuinn, Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney. 1967 was the beginning of the summer of love, and at the festival there were many hippies with flowers in their hair. Even Brian Jones was at the festival wandering around in a cape. Among the performers were Canned Heat, The Mamas and Papas, Quick silver Messenger Service, The Byrds, Big Brother and The Holding Company,and Simon and Garfunkel. Jefferson Airplane did a great performance with a light show going on behind them and Grace Slick with her powerful vocals sang out the lyrics to High Flying Bird. The Who also did an amazing performance. Monterey was the first time they played in America. They did there first hit "Substitute"with Roger Daltrey twirling around the stage and swinging his mike and Keith keeping a beat on drums. He actually broke three drumsticks during that song. The Who also did "My Generation" and "A Quick One While He's Away." They ended with Keith kicking over his drums, smoke bombs going off and Pete Smashing his guitar. Then they just walked off stage like nothing at all happened, wow what a show. On Saturday afternoon Big Brother and The Holding Company took the stage with Janis Joplin, wearing a gold knit suit and beads around her neck she sang "Ball and Chain." The festival ended with Jimi Hendrix singing "Wild Thing" and setting his guitar on fire.
