Folk music originated a long time ago in the 19th century, but what makes 60s folk music different is a political message. Bob Dylan is best known for putting political messages in his songs and writing meaningful lyrics. In the late fifties Greenwich Village was home to writers, poets, and musicians, who were called, beatnik's. By the early sixties the folk movement began in the village. Folk musicians spent their time singing in coffee houses and music clubs. The influences of folk music in Greenwich village carried on across the country and found itself in California with folk-rock bands like The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and Jefferson Airplane and singers Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Judy Collins. In England folk music was just as popular, in 1965 the Beatles even released Rubber Soul, which was a folk-rock album. There was also folk-rock bands such as The Pentangle and Fairport Convention that were popular and both featured female vocalists. There were several folk festivals that took place during the sixties and seventies. the Newport Folk Festival began in 1959 and still goes on today. The Big Sur Folk festival started in 1963 and ended in 1972, musicians that performed include, Joan Baez, Mimi Fariña, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Joni Mitchell,Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie, and The Beach Boys.
